Maternal Mortality Rate Drops, Prenatal Access Expands Across Parishes

Jamaica's maternal mortality rate has seen a significant decline. The Ministry of Health is expanding prenatal care access through new clinics and digital tools.
KINGSTON, Jamaica - Jamaica's maternal mortality ratio (MMR) has shown a notable decline, falling to an estimated 56.2 deaths per 100,000 live births for the 2021-2023 period, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Health and Wellness. This represents a significant improvement from the 2018-2020 period, when the MMR was reported at 88.6.
The Ministry attributes the progress to targeted interventions, including the expansion of high-dependency units in hospitals and improved management of obstetric emergencies. The government is actively working to increase access to prenatal care, particularly in rural parishes, through the deployment of more community health aides and the establishment of new antenatal clinics in underserved areas.
For Jamaican families, this trend signals a strengthening of the healthcare system's capacity to support safe pregnancies and childbirth. The Ministry has also launched a telehealth pilot program in several parishes, allowing for remote prenatal consultations to bridge geographical gaps in service delivery.
Looking ahead, health officials have indicated that continued investment in midwifery training and the full rollout of the National Maternal Mortality Surveillance and Response System are key priorities. The next major report on maternal health indicators is expected from the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) later this year.
