How to Get a TRN in Jamaica: The Complete 2026 Guide
Your Tax Registration Number is required for almost everything in Jamaica. This guide covers every step to get one.

The Tax Registration Number (TRN) is a nine-digit number issued by the Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ). It is Jamaica's national identifier. You need it to open a bank account, get a job, buy or sell property, register a vehicle, apply for a passport, and register a business.
Who Needs a TRN?
- All Jamaican citizens and permanent residents aged 18 and over
- Non-residents who earn income in Jamaica
- Registered businesses and companies operating in Jamaica
- Minors (children) can also be registered, required for some school and health processes
Documents You Need
You only need one primary ID document to apply. TAJ accepts any of the following:
- National ID (Voter's ID): most common and accepted at all TAJ offices
- Valid Jamaican passport
- Birth certificate plus one supporting document (school ID, bank card, utility bill)
- Driver's licence (adults)
- For children: birth certificate plus parent's valid ID
Tip: If you have a National ID or passport, just bring that. TAJ can process your application on the spot with either of those.
How to Apply
Option 1: Apply In Person (TAJ Office)
- Visit any Tax Administration Jamaica office. Main offices are in Kingston (Constant Spring, Half-Way Tree, downtown), Montego Bay, Spanish Town, Mandeville, and other parish capitals.
- Join the queue or take a number at the TRN section.
- Present your identification document to the officer.
- Fill out the TRN application form (they provide it at the counter).
- The officer will process your application and issue your TRN number on the spot. The physical card usually takes 2-3 weeks to arrive by mail.
Option 2: Apply Online (Non-Residents)
If you are a non-resident (Jamaican in the diaspora who needs a TRN), you can apply through the TAJ online portal at www.jamaicatax.gov.jm. You'll need to upload a copy of your passport or other ID. Processing typically takes 5-7 business days.
Cost
Applying for a TRN is completely free. There is no fee for a new TRN. Replacement of a lost TRN card or updating your information may have a nominal fee. Confirm the current amount with TAJ at the time of your visit.
What If You've Lost Your TRN Number?
If you already have a TRN but have forgotten the number or lost your card, visit any TAJ office with your ID. They can look up your number in the system immediately. You can also call the TAJ Customer Care Centre at 1-888-TAX-HELP (1-888-829-4357).
Common Questions
Can I get a TRN on the same day?
Yes. If you apply in person with a valid National ID or passport, the officer will give you your TRN number the same day. The physical card is mailed separately within a few weeks.
Do children need a TRN?
Children don't typically need a TRN until they start working or open a bank account, but some schools and NHFUND registration processes may require it. You can register a minor using their birth certificate and a parent's ID.
Is the TRN the same as a NIS number?
No. They are different numbers issued by different agencies. The TRN is issued by TAJ. Your NIS number is issued by the Ministry of Labour and is used specifically for social security contributions. You need both if you are employed.
Warning: Your TRN is sensitive personal information. Never share it unnecessarily. TAJ will never contact you by email or text message asking for your TRN for verification purposes. Any such contact is a scam.
